Special Rate and Charge Levy Renewal, 2027-2032

About the Renewal

Since 1998, businesses in Kew Junction have benefited from a marketing and business levy that funds the work of the Kew Junction Business Association (KJBA). We are now seeking to renew this program for a further five years, from 1 July 2027 to 30 June 2032.

What is the Special Rate and Charge Scheme?

It’s a levy added to the rates of commercially-zoned properties in Kew Junction, collected by the City of Boroondara and passed directly to KJBA. It funds marketing, events, business support and advocacy for the precinct – it’s not a new charge, and renewal simply continues something that’s already part of how Kew Junction operates and has done for nearly three decades.

The renewal is an investment in the future of the precinct. Our goal is to keep developing Kew Junction and make it a better place for your business to operate, and for the wider community.

Our achievements

Over the life of the current 2022-2027 scheme, KJBA has delivered:

  • A new Kew Junction Brand Strategy – “Life Flows Better Here” – with a full Brand Identity refresh now underway
  • A sold-out Vixens Kew-munity Dinner and consistently strong Progressive Dinners, with the 2027 edition being submitted to the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival as a Special Event (application pending – fingers crossed!)
  • Our biggest-ever School Holiday Program, now offering more than 500 places each term
  • A new Seniors Festival, launching this October with Bendigo Bank as major event sponsor
  • A reimagined Halloween “Spooky Day Out”, partnering with Boroondara Cemetery and Kew Court House to spread activity safely across the precinct
  • The launch of the Kew Junction Traders WhatsApp Community, giving traders real-time, direct communication with the Association
  • Regular trader e-newsletters and updates, alongside more than 60 in-person trader visits building stronger relationships across the precinct
  • A structured, equitable approach to social media that ensures traders are featured
  • Strengthened financial governance, with annual reports and business plans lodged and approved on schedule

“This scheme has been the backbone of how we market and support businesses in Kew Junction for nearly thirty years. We want to keep building on that, together with our traders, for the next five years.”

Tracey Ellett
Acting President, KJBA
